Upcoming book on 5G and millimeter-wave circuits highlights ComSenTer experts' discoveries

The new book "Millimeter-Wave Circuits for 5G and Radar", co-edited by Ali Niknejad, ComSenTer Co-director, and Gernot Hueber (Silicon Austria Labs) is currently in print at the Cambridge University Press and will be available online in May and in hardcopy form at the end of July 2019.  A limited number of copies will be available at RFIC/IMS in June.

Niknejad says he is extremely pleased with the outcome. “Given the importance of 5G and radar technology, Gernot and I felt compelled to write a textbook that is both modern and topical and yet fundamental in nature, so that it could serve as reference to students and engineers for years to come,” Niknejad says. “Fortunately, we were able to do this in a compressed timeline by recruiting top leaders in the field as co-authors on all the important topics.”

Readers of the book will be able to discover the concepts, architectures, components, tools, and techniques needed to design millimeter-wave circuits for current and emerging wireless system applications. The full design chain is covered, from system design requirements to building blocks, transceivers, and process technology.

The book showcases ComSenTer research carried out by leading academic groups and industry partners. Massive MIMO technology research from the ComSenTer is highlighted, authored by Ali Niknejad, Elad Alon and Borivoje Nikolic from UC Berkeley, as well as full duplex techniques by Harish Krishnaswamy from Columbia University.

The chapter on technology showcases ComSenTer industry partners' world-leading expertise through contributions by Hyung-Jin Lee (Intel), Bernhard Sell (Intel), Bodhisatwa Sadhu (IBM), and Wanghua Wu (Samsung).

In his written review of the book, Kamal Sahota, Vice President of Engineering at Qualcomm, recognizes the value of the work calling it "a book of landmark importance for practitioners of 5G RF system and RF circuit design covering millimeter-wave and frequency-division duplex (FDD) transceivers."

"I hope the book can play a role in the convergence and acceleration of 5G and 6G technology which is taking shape today in its infancy around the world, but has the potential to mature into an indispensable technology that will transform many industries, just as we witnessed from 3G/4G and WiFi technologies in the past," Niknejad concludes.
