Our team seeks to understand MAC and networking aspects of THz systems. We consider a variety of topologies including point-to-point links, cellular networks, mesh deployments and UAVs. We explore a range of problems including directional search, control signaling, scheduling algorithms (including SDMA), capacity estimation, congestion control and end-to-end application evaluation.


We develop and evaluate protocols and algorithms for: (i) MAC-layer and RRC protocols, particularly for directional search, access and control plane signaling; (ii) MAC-layer scheduling algorithms including multi-user and MIMO scheduling; (iii) congestion control. In addition, we will be developing detailed end-to-end simulation tools building on earlier ns3 mmWave network simulation tools.

We interface with several other teams: (i) channel models for range, blocking and dynamics will be supplied by the channel modeling team; (ii) throughput and latency requirements are being developed by the applications team and (iii) device / circuit performance is being developed by the respective teams, (iv) the MIMO team is supplying performance numbers relevant for link-layer aspects. For the applications team, we may seek to develop combined simulation tools that can jointly simulate the wireless links and application.


Our team has already made significant accomplishments: (i) Developed a comprehensive ns3-based simulation platform for mm-wave and this is being extended to THz. Importantly, the simulator accurately models blockage and core network delays. (ii) The platform has provided the first studies of end-to-end applicaitons and TCP / congestion control algorithms; (iii) first detailed studies of initial access, directional search and search in idle mode; (iv) first complete end-to-end simulations of novel THz applications including UAVs.

Sundeep Rangan

Sundeep Rangan received the B.A.Sc. at the University of Waterloo, Canada and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, all in Electrical Engineering.  He has held postdoctoral appointments at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and Bell Labs.  In 2000, he co-founded (with four others) Flarion Technologies, a spin off of Bell Labs, that developed Flash OFDM, the first cellular OFDM data system and pre-cursor to 4G cellular systems including LTE and WiMAX. In 2006, Flarion was acquired by Qualcomm Technologies.  Dr. Rangan was a Director of Engineering at Qualcomm involved in OFDM infrastructure products.  He joined the ECE department at NYU Tandon (formerly NYU Polytechnic) in 2010.  He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the Director of NYU WIRELESS, an industry-academic research center on next-generation wireless systems.  His research interests are in wireless communications, signal processing, information theory and control theory.
